Compare the Subaru Ascent vs Toyota Highlander

There is a new family-friendly SUV head this way and drivers around the Boston area are excited to finally meet Subaru's largest SUV ever. The all-new 2019 Subaru Ascent is a three-row SUV that is perfect for busy families who are always on the go. But how well does the competition compare the Ascent? To help our customers who are getting ready to trade in their current vehicle for a new SUV we have compared the Toyota Highlander to the new Ascent in all the ways that matter most.

Performance

Like many Belmont drivers you want to get behind the wheel of an SUV that is fun to drive and also fuel efficient. Which may seem like a contradiction, a fuel-efficient SUV? But the 2019 Subaru Ascent is the perfect blend of efficient power with a powerful 2.4L turbocharged four-cylinder that generates an impressive 260 horsepower. While getting up to 21 highway and 27 city miles per gallon. The Highlander has two engine options to choose from. The standard 2.7L four-cylinder engine only generates 185 horsepower while the available 3.5L V6 produces 295 horsepower. While the Ascent only has one powertrain option it is more powerful and efficient for its size than both of the Highlanders engines. The Ascent can also the ability to tow the same amount as the Highlander; 5,000 lbs.

Like all other Subaru's before the Ascent, the 2019 Ascent comes standard with Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. The Toyota Highlander is available with all-wheel-drive for an additional cost that also reduces the Highlander's fuel efficiency. Other standard performance features that come standard on the Ascent include X-Mode, Hill Descent Control, Trailer Stability Assist, Active Torque Vectoring, Traction Control System, and Vehicle Dynamics Control. The Ascent also has a larger fuel tank than the Highlander giving you the ability to fill up less often.

Safety

What is the most important thing that your next SUV has to offer? For many Natick residents it is safety because everyone wants to get behind the wheel of a safe and reliable vehicle. And when it comes to safety the Subaru Ascent is raising the bar with Subaru EyeSight standard on every model. Yup! That’s right. The Toyota Highlander isn't the only family-friendly SUV on the road that comes standard with advanced safety features.

    Toyota Safety Sense:
  • Pre-Collision System23 with Pedestrian Detection
  • Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist
  • Automatic High Beams
  • Dynamic Radar Cruise Control
    Subaru EyeSight:
  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Pre-Collision Braking
  • Lane Keep Assist and Sway Warning
  • Pre-Collision Throttle Management

In addition to standard EyeSight technology the 2019 Subaru Ascent also has a host of other advanced safety features that the Toyota Highlander isn't available with. Like LED Steering Responsive, Reverse Automatic Braking, and Front View Camera. Other available safety features the Ascent has to offer include High Beam Assist, Blind-Spot Detection with Lane Change Assist and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, and STARLINK™ Safety and Security. Subaru's STARLINK™ Safety and Security includes Automatic Collision Notification and SOS Emergency Assistance and is standard on every model except the base trim level. The Highlander's most expensive trim level is the only Highlander that features Automatic Collision Notification and Emergency Assistance.

Technology & Features

The 2019 Subaru Ascent has a lot of offer and we haven't begun to cover all the amazing features it has that are super convenient and help make life a little easier. Like standard 19 cupholders! Or up to eight available USB charging ports to keep everyone powered up. The Toyota Highlander only has 5 USB ports in the front and middle row and only 8 cupholders. Other features that the Toyota Highlander doesn’t offer or are only available on select trim levels include raised roof rails, power rear liftgate, Apple CarPlay & Android Auto, and heated steering wheel. All of which come standard or available on the 2019 Subaru Ascent.
